What is the real definition of family?
As someone who is not the biggest fan of Tigger, I admit his standout movie, “The Tigger Movie,” had me in my feelings.
The heart of the movie is defining who your family is. For a young child, the message might go over their head, or they may not understand it.
But for me, a 28-year-old watching this for the first time, it hit home.
Throughout the movie, Tigger searches for his family, not realizing that the family he’s been looking for has been right in front of him all this time.
I’m not like Tigger. I grew up with a family whom I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.
But outside of blood relatives, the friends that I decided to be around are my second family, people who I can depend on, my sisters.
That’s what I thought about while watching this movie. The ones I consider my family and the ones who look up to me like their big sister.
But there is a sense of belonging that I empathize with Tigger. No one, except for Roo, understands why Tigger loves to bounce so much. And constantly getting told no when asking his friends if they wanted to bounce with him can become discouraging over time.
So it’s only natural for Tigger to look for people who understand the urge to bounce. His family.
But what I loved is that even though Tigger’s friends might not understand, they did everything they could to help and support him. They tried to look for his family tree, clues for his family’s whereabouts, cheer him up, and look for him when all hope seemed lost. Even Rabbit joined the search and rescue mission.
Sometimes, it’s not about the family that you’re born into. Sometimes, it’s about the people you surround yourself with every day, the ones you can call and depend on. The ones that you create bonds with.
